Keeping Your Garage Warm this winter

Keeping Your Garage Warm this winter

Insulate Your Garage from the Harsh Weather

This might be hard to believe because it’s a neglected area in most homes, but allowing warm air escape from your garage makes a big dent in your utility bills.

Apart from that, if tools are stored in the garage, the cold may damage it. As a result, it is advisable, as it gets colder, to make sure your garage and garage door is properly insulated against the cold.

Insulate the Door and the Walls

If your garage door is not insulated, or your insulation is not working perfectly, warm air generated by your heater is escaping through your garage door. If this is the case, your first move should be procuring or replacing the insulation in walls of your garage. There are different types of insulation; many experts recommend fiberglass batt insulation because it’s fairly affordable but you should consider other options like foam board insulation or reflective barriers.

The major issue with the fiberglass batt insulation is; the installation procedure requires some skill. Care should be taken that the material isn’t crammed inside the wall space; it has to fit cozily. To accomplish this, precise sizes of fiberglass has to be cut before application, and this can be difficult and quite messy.

Not all materials can serve as insulation for garage doors. The Director of Engineering, eComfort.com, Konrad Wintek once said “Some garage doors do not have recessed panels that make for an easy insulation project.’’ In these instances, Mr. Wintek said, it is better to buy doors with built-in insulation.

Sealing the Deal

Once the insulation has been installed, complete the job by closing up any cracked spaces that might be letting cold air in. Make sure the windows in your garage-if any-is tightly shut.

There is a higher likelihood of losing heat through the door though. Because of moisture and temperature change, the weather-stripping around the lower part of the garage door gets cracked sometimes.  As a result of this, the garage door won’t close properly, letting cold air in, in the process. Clear off the affected weather-stripping, along with any residual glue on the door, and replace the seal to prevent air leakage. It’s quite easy to do all these by yourself.

If your door doesn’t have adequate insulation for your garage, there is a rich variety of garage doors that can meet your requirements as regards to insulation while also giving your garage a great look.
