Winter is close at hand, it is therefore important to pass your garage door through this checklist before it disappoints you. The process doesn’t take time-less than 30 minutes, and it can be done using household items.
- Examine the battery in your remote control
Depending on how much you make use of your garage door, the battery may last up to a year. It’s smart to always have a spare battery handy.
- Examine the battery in the external keypad
Located under the cover of the keypad is a 9-volt battery, you will need a screwdriver to access it. Since the battery is exposed to temperature fluctuations, it is advised to change it every year.
- Examine the springs in and around your garage door
Firstly, disable the garage door by pulling on the emergency bar (usually red in color). Open the door gently with one hand. If you were able to raise the door with relative ease, there is nothing wrong with the springs, if not, there are many likely reasons. Don’t try to fix it personally, contact a garage door professional who will identify the fault, and fix it.
- Check the weather-stripping around the garage door edges
Weather-stripping is usually on the frame of garage doors. Check to confirm that the weather-stripping is not damaged or hardened; if it is, put in new ones. If it is made of Poly Vinyl Chloride, use a silicone-based lubricant.
- Add a Lubricant to the metallic parts of the hardware
Be sure to lubricate all moving metal parts: tracks, springs, rollers.
- Before application, use a dry rag to wipe off any leftover lubricant and also to remove any residual dust.
- Apply an oil-based garage door lubricant (like 10-30W motor oil).
- Use sparingly and wipe up excesses.
- WD-40 is often used mistakenly as a lubricant, avoid that mistake, WD-40 is actually a degreaser and not a lubricant.
- Avoid using grease in and around the tracks, because the rollers are meant to roll and grease makes it slide in the tracks.
- Check the reversal systems in your Door
The reversal system can be either mechanical or photoelectric.
For mechanical: Put a piece of wood on the edge of the garage door, then push the switch to shut the door. When the door contacts it, the door on encountering some resistance, should stop and then go back up. If it fails to do that, check the door opener maintenance/instruction manual to locate the button to make the necessary arrangement.
For photoelectric: With this kind of safety system (2 encased units, about 4 inches away from the ground) in place, place something in front of said beam as the garage door closes. The door is supposed to stop and reverse; if it doesn’t, the most probable cause of the fault is that the two parts are not aligned. Check the alignment, correct any fault and repeat the process. If the problem persists, contact a professional immediately.
